April 24, 1941 - Thursday

We went up town and got our breakfast at the drug store, and while we were there, we bought a camera to take some pictures of the hula show. We took the bus to Waikiki Beach
http://photos.igougo.com/images/p339429-Honolulu_HI-Waikiki_Beach_Day.jpg where the show was to be held. We took the pictures of the dance then went to the aquarium there at the beach. http://www.vacationidea.com/hawaii/gallery/waikikiaquarium_Gallery4.html The sun was very hot. We walked a little way along the beach and took a picture of the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.http://www.royal-hawaiian.com/resort.aspx We came back here to the Y.M.C.A. and cleaned up. Went to town and saw the show "You're the One" with Bonnie Baker and Orin Tucker. Jerry Calonna stole the show.http://blog.wfmu.org/photos/uncategorized/00000000000000000000colona1_2.jpg

Arrived in Honolulu at 9 o'clock. Passed the Aloha Tower thttp://oahu.aloha-hawaii.com/tours/aloha+tower/ where the natives came out to meet the boat and dive for coins. Harold met me at the pier. We were both excited we shook. The Aloha Tower was tottering. Harold gave me eight beautiful leis. Jack Bowman, our very good friend, was with us and looked after my baggage. We came to the Y.M.C.A. and unpacked my trunk. We went to get our marriage license, and before we said a word, the clerk said, "Marriage licenses down the hall." We came back to the Y. Harold took my dress to have it pressed then came back to Kress's and ate lunch, and then we went shopping for a ring. We came back to the "Y", dressed, and Harold went to the florist and got me an orchid. At 4 o'clock, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Williams came for us and took us, together iwth Jack Bowman, to thechapelof the Central Union Church http://www.centralunionchurch.org/ where the chaplain, Frederick Volbeda, U.S. Navy, married us at 4:45. We had a very beautiful and splendid ceremony. We came back to town and ate dinner at Times Grill with Jack.

Preface

When you read this day by day account, we will to realize that we were under the rule of the Navy and no time for ourselves, only on days of liberty. Too, we were on an island the circumfrance of 90 miles. When you first came there, you didn't notice it , but the longer you stayed, you realized. There were a lot of clubs for the service, but everything was very expensive - too much so for our pay, but we enjoyed our friends and the natural beauty of the place, and we were very happy.
